“ To set in logical order; to make or form by combining or arranging parts or elements.”
Don’t you love order? It (usually) helps society function in merging traffic, flight patterns, grocery lines, and even spreadsheets. Structure shapes the way we operate, yet the construction process can seem anything but orderly without the right team and effective communication.
When working on new homes or re-modeling existing spaces, I love to have a plan in place prior to any physical work starting. Why could this be helpful?
Having all (or almost all) selections made means we know lead times and availability of stock to meet the schedule so that materials can be ordered and appropriately stored
The projected timeframe runs smoothly, because major decisions have already been considered, and if they need to be altered, we have an original vision as a guiding reference point
There is less foreseeable stress when decisions are made up-front, versus in the middle of demo or construction, as pricing could fluctuate and options could be limited by the timeline
We have a realistic budget/ quote because fewer (if any) changes need to be made once crews are working
Initial team meetings allow all parties to be “on the same page” with the vision and selections so that questions are answered, challenges addressed, and everyone knows their role and methods of communication
Construction is a very rewarding process when thorough preparation is included. If you have been waiting years to build your “forever home” or modify one that has become dated or needs customization, it can be easy to jump ahead with wanting the finished product. Allowing time to develop a design plan unique to you, your family, and lifestyle will pay dividends in the end.
